The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, believes that giving traditional rulers constitutional roles will improve the country’s security. He shared this at an event marking one year of the 10th House of Representatives. Abbas said the House will work on a constitutional amendment to officially recognize traditional rulers.
He pointed out that past attempts to do this were unsuccessful but expressed confidence that the current leadership will push it forward.
Abbas explained that two special committees were created to focus on making traditional institutions legally recognized and ensuring local governments have more autonomy. He also noted that these changes could help strengthen the country’s security. A previous bill to give traditional rulers constitutional roles was rejected in the last assembly.
