Reps. Agree to Donate 50% of Salaries to Support Economic Recovery

Members of the House of Representatives have agreed to donate 50% of their salaries for the next six months to help the government address the country’s economic problems.

This decision came after a motion was raised by Ibrahim Isiaka, a lawmaker from Ogun State, who urged Nigerians to give the government time to solve issues like unemployment, insecurity, and high living costs. He appealed to the youth to choose peaceful dialogue over protests to find solutions together.

Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu proposed that each member contribute half of their salary, which amounts to N300,000 per month. This would result in a total of N108 million per month, or N648 million over the next six months, to support government efforts. Kalu stressed that although the country’s problems are serious, the government is doing its best, and he encouraged the youth to stay patient.

In another development, the Governor of Niger State, Mohammed Bago, assured that the youths in his state would not take part in the planned nationwide protest set for August 1-10, 2024. This came after the House appealed for unity and patience as the government continues working on improving the economy.
