The House of Representatives has ordered the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) and the distribution companies (DISCOs) to immediately reverse the tariff hike for Band A electricity customers. This decision was made after the House Committee on Power presented a report stating that Nigerians cannot afford the increased rates. The committee recommended returning to the previous tariff structure.
The tariff hike, which was introduced in April, required Band A customers to pay N225 per kilowatt for electricity. NERC had assured that these customers would receive at least 20 hours of electricity per day, but the decision sparked negative reactions from many Nigerians.
In addition to reversing the hike, the House has decided to conduct further investigations into the reasons behind the increase. The committee’s recommendations were adopted, and the matter will be further examined in the coming weeks.
