The Senate has approved the new National Minimum Wage Bill, which raises the minimum wage from N30,000 to N70,000 per month.
The bill also shortens the review period from five years to three years. President Bola Tinubu had sent the bill to the National Assembly earlier, urging quick approval. After a brief discussion and a clause-by-clause review, the Senate passed the bill with a voice vote.
In the House of Representatives, the bill also passed its second reading, with Majority Leader Julius Ihonvbere leading the debate. However, Senator Ali Ndume from Borno South criticized the new wage, saying it wouldn’t be enough to support a household given the current high cost of living. He urged the president to reconsider the wage increase to better support Nigerian workers.
