Reps Explain Delay in 50% Salary Deduction Promise

The House of Representatives has explained why it hasn’t yet started deducting 50% of lawmakers’ salaries, as promised in July. According to the House spokesperson, Rotimi Akin, the delay was due to administrative processes and coordination with banks, but the instructions for the deductions have now been issued and will take effect soon.

In July, lawmakers agreed to sacrifice half of their monthly N600,000 salaries for six months to show solidarity with Nigerians facing economic hardships. Akin reassured the public that the House remains committed to this promise and urged patience while the process is finalized.

He also addressed rumors that lawmakers earn N936,979 monthly, clarifying that their actual salary is N600,000 after deductions for housing and other advances. Akin added that the formal instruction for the deductions was issued on July 23 after the resolution was adopted.

The House assured Nigerians it will honor its pledge and continue working to build public trust.
