The House of Representatives has cleared up confusion surrounding the Counter Subversion Bill, which was introduced by Speaker Abbas Tajudeen. In a statement by his media aide, Musa Krishi, the Speaker explained that the Bill focuses on improving national security by addressing activities of criminal groups, militias, and banned organizations.
The Bill, first introduced on July 23, 2024, is still in the early stages and has not yet been debated. It will go through several steps, including a public hearing where Nigerians can share their opinions. These inputs will be considered by the House before making any final decision.
Similar laws exist in other countries like the UK, Canada, and India. The Speaker reassured Nigerians that the Bill is not aimed at any particular group or region and will follow all proper legislative procedures. The public is encouraged to participate in the process and help shape the outcome.
