The House of Representatives has expressed concern over the kidnapping of 20 medical students in Benue State and called on security agencies to act quickly to rescue them.
The students, 12 from the University of Jos and 8 from the University of Maiduguri, were traveling to Enugu for a medical conference organized by the Federation of Catholic Medical and Dental Students (FECAMDS) when they were abducted on Thursday, August 15, 2024.
Akin Rotimi, spokesperson for the House, described the situation as alarming and urged the police and other security agencies to ensure the students are safely returned.
The Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) has also raised concerns. In a letter to the Inspector-General of Police, NMA Secretary-General Dr. Benjamin Egbo called for urgent action, stressing the importance of the students’ safety.
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) condemned the incident, saying, “These students represent the future of Nigeria. An attack on them is an attack on the nation’s future.”
The House of Representatives assured Nigerians of its commitment to supporting the efforts to secure the students’ release and emphasized the need for swift and decisive action by the authorities.
