OVH: Reps Member, Miriam Onuoha, Slams Atiku, Says Oil, Gas Sector Shouldn’t Be Politicised

Hon. Miriam Onuoha, a member of the House of Representatives from Imo State, has spoken out about the importance of keeping Nigeria’s oil and gas sector free from politics. She emphasized that while it’s important to critique the sector constructively, using propaganda or blackmail for political gain is harmful and unpatriotic.

Her statement followed a comment from former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who questioned why Oando Plc received quick approval for its purchase of AGIP/ENI assets. Onuoha was mentioned in a press release, which claimed she moved a motion to suspend OVH assets. However, Onuoha clarified that she didn’t make such a motion. Instead, she sponsored a motion in July 2023 to investigate concerns from NNPC Limited staff about their job security after the company’s acquisition of OVH. This motion led to the formation of a committee, which interviewed NNPC officials and staff members, and also visited NNPC facilities in Lagos.

Onuoha also praised NNPC for its efforts to improve transparency under the leadership of Mele Kyari. She highlighted that NNPC has been more open, publishing its financial results and engaging with the public through press conferences and outreach programs. However, she pointed out that there’s still room for improvement.

While Onuoha supports holding the government accountable, she made it clear that she won’t allow herself to be used for political attacks against President Bola Tinubu’s administration, especially in the oil and gas sector, which is crucial to Nigeria’s economy.
