The House of Representatives has announced that the Joint Senate/House Ad Hoc Committees on the Petroleum Industry Investigation will be inaugurated on September 25, 2024. This follows the disbanding of the Ad-Hoc Joint Committee on Downstream and Midstream, which had been investigating the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Ltd. (NNPCL) and the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) over issues like the importation of contaminated petrol and the lack of crude oil for local refineries.

House Spokesman Akin Rotimi stated that the 10th Assembly will continue to pursue its Legislative Agenda, with a focus on national development and oil and gas reforms. During the resumption on September 24, 2024, the leadership will also inaugurate the new board of the Public Complaints Commission (PCC). Additional details will be shared during plenary.

Rotimi also mentioned that lawmakers have been conducting constituency outreach and strengthening oversight of government ministries and agencies. A new committee will continue the investigation into energy security issues, including the importation of adulterated petroleum products and challenges faced by domestic refineries.

Earlier, 118 lawmakers had placed an advertorial defending NNPCL during the previous investigation, but some of those named distanced themselves from it.
