The House of Representatives has expressed its eagerness to receive the 2025 Budget and other important bills from the executive when it resumes on Tuesday after its two-month break. House Spokesman, Hon. Akin Rotimi, stated that receiving these bills on time is crucial for proper review and for involving the public through Town Hall meetings, a practice introduced by the House during the 2024 Budget review.

Rotimi assured that the House is committed to maintaining the January-December budget cycle and is counting on the executive’s cooperation to meet this deadline. He also reaffirmed the House’s dedication to reviewing the 1999 Constitution by the December 2025 deadline. The Committee on Constitution Review, led by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, will continue its work on important legal reforms that reflect public needs.

The House has already received about 305 public memoranda and 150 proposed changes to the Constitution from lawmakers, which will be given priority. Additionally, the House plans to amend the Electoral Act 2022 to address its shortcomings, with ongoing consultations on electoral reforms already taking place.

Following the Supreme Court ruling on Local Government Autonomy, the House expects bills to align existing laws with the new ruling. The House is also anticipating a bill on Whistleblower Protection, which aligns with its legislative agenda to promote good governance and improve national security.

Rotimi highlighted the growing public interest in the House’s efforts to ensure the implementation of its resolutions and follow up on pending reports. The leadership, along with relevant committees, will work to ensure transparency and hold those responsible accountable.
