Reps Move to Address Delays in Justice System, Restore Public Trust

The House of Representatives has decided to review Nigeria’s judicial system to address delays in delivering justice and restore public confidence in the courts. The House has tasked the Committee on Constitution Review with holding public hearings to find lasting solutions to these issues.

This decision followed a motion by Hon. Ganiyu Adele Ayuba (APC, Lagos) at a plenary session on Wednesday. Ayuba explained that the judiciary’s job is to ensure timely justice, as required by Nigeria’s Constitution. Ayuba also pointed out that issues like extended detentions and unresolved disputes are harming both democracy and the economy. He warned that if the delays are not addressed soon, people may start to lose faith in the courts and take matters into their own hands.
