Reps to Investigate Causes of Frequent Building Collapses in Nigeria

Share

The House of Representatives has decided to look into the frequent building collapses in Nigeria to understand why they are happening and find ways to stop them. This decision came after a motion by Hon. Aderemi Oseni from Oyo State, who expressed concern about the safety of Nigerians due to these accidents.

Oseni mentioned a tragic incident on July 12, 2024, in Jos, Plateau State, where 154 people were trapped under a collapsed two-story building, with 22 people confirmed dead. He also noted that between 2022 and July 2024, there were 135 building collapses across the country, which highlighted the urgency of addressing the issue.

Oseni emphasized that professional bodies like the Council of Registered Engineers of Nigeria (COREN) must do a better job of ensuring that building standards are followed to prevent these disasters from happening again.
