Reps Urge Federal Government to Review Tax Policies and Ease Burden on Nigerians

The House of Representatives has called on the Federal Government to review current tax policies, especially those that impose multiple taxes on essential goods and services, which are adding to the financial burden on Nigerians.

Led by Hon. Peter Aniekwe, the lawmakers urged the government to find alternative ways to raise revenue, such as widening the tax base to include more high-income earners, improving tax enforcement, and reducing wasteful spending. They also recommended increasing exports of cash crops and agricultural products.

The call came as lawmakers expressed concern about the country’s struggling economy, with rising inflation, unemployment, and higher living costs making life harder for many Nigerians, particularly those with low incomes. The lawmakers emphasized that while taxes are necessary, they need to balance revenue generation with the well-being of citizens, especially at a time when many are still recovering from tough economic conditions.
