The House of Representatives has urged the federal government to summon Libya’s Ambassador to Nigeria over the alleged inhumane treatment of the Super Eagles and their delegation during their recent visit to Libya for an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.
During a plenary session, lawmakers condemned the actions of the Libyan authorities and the Libyan Football Federation, describing the ordeal as unacceptable. The motion, moved by Hon. Kabiru Amadu Mai-Palace, highlighted the poor reception the Super Eagles received upon arrival in Libya, including being stranded at Al-Abrag International Airport for 18 hours without access to basic amenities like food, internet, or shelter.
Hon. Kabiru expressed disappointment over the diversion of the team’s flight to a smaller airport with limited facilities, despite prior arrangements for their arrival in Benghazi. He noted that the treatment extended to the team, which included players, officials, NFF board members, and government representatives, was disrespectful and unbefitting of a visiting national team.
The House called on the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) to file an official complaint with both CAF and FIFA to ensure accountability. The lawmakers stressed the need to protect the dignity of Nigerian athletes and demanded an investigation into the incident by the House Committees on Sports and Foreign Affairs.
They also commended the Super Eagles for their resilience and patriotism despite the hostility they faced. The House reiterated that such acts of hostility by any nation would not be tolerated, urging swift diplomatic action to address the situation.
