Reps Urge Lower Electricity Tariff for Tertiary Institutions

The House of Representatives has asked the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) and electricity distribution companies (DisCos) to lower electricity tariffs for public universities and colleges.

This request follows concerns raised by Hon. Abubakar Hassan Fulata, who said the recent increase in electricity prices is adding to the financial struggles of these institutions, which are already underfunded.

Hon. Abubakar warned that power cuts for schools unable to pay their bills are damaging important equipment and putting students and staff at risk. He also said the rising costs could force institutions to raise fees, potentially leading to student protests. In response, the House called on the government to stop disconnecting power or issuing high bills to these institutions and to place them under a lower tariff, either Band ‘C’ or Band ‘D’.
