The House of Representatives has called for a thorough investigation into the killings of seven individuals from Plateau State, who were murdered in Awka, the capital of Anambra State. The victims were motorcycle riders from the Kanam Local Government Area in Plateau. The tragic incident took place when the victims were working at a mechanic’s garage near the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Gate. The attack was carried out by armed assailants while the victims were repairing their motorcycles.
The motion for the investigation was brought forward by Hon. Yusuf Gagdi, a member of the House of Representatives representing Plateau State. Gagdi expressed deep sorrow over the brutal killings, noting that the victims were peaceful, law-abiding citizens who had every right to live and work in any part of Nigeria. He emphasized that they were not involved in any criminal activities but were simply earning a living in a legitimate, peaceful manner.
The victims included Joseph Ishaku, 31, Jamila Haruna, 20, Abdultawab Aliyu, 28, Abdul-Razak Muhammed, 18, and Nurudeen Yusuf, 23, all of whom were shot dead. Two others, Ayuba Habu, 23, Abdulkareem Haruna, 25, and Anas Abdulwahab, 30, were severely injured in the attack. The victims were all from the Gumshar and Gwamlar areas of Kanam Local Government Area in Plateau State.
Gagdi expressed his concerns about the rising insecurity in Nigeria, particularly in the southeastern region, where the killings took place. He warned that such violent acts could threaten the peace and security of the country, affecting Nigerians’ freedom to live and work in any part of the nation. He further stated that if prompt security measures are not taken, the situation could lead to widespread unrest, including possible reprisal attacks, and undermine the stability of the nation. The House of Representatives has urged the authorities to act swiftly to ensure the safety and rights of Nigerians across the country.
