Reps Pass Bill to End Sexual Harassment in Universities and Colleges

The House of Representatives has passed a bill aimed at protecting students in tertiary institutions from sexual harassment. Sponsored by Hon. Akin Rotimi, the bill proposes penalties for offenders, including 5 to 14 years of imprisonment for educators found guilty of harassment.

Noting that heads of institutions who fail to act on complaints could face a N5 million fine, 5 years in prison, or both.

The bill seeks to safeguard students against unwanted sexual advances and ensure educators do not create hostile environments. It also holds school authorities accountable for neglecting harassment cases.

The law promotes ethical behavior in higher institutions and protects the dignity of students while ensuring a safe learning environment.
