The House of Representatives has called on Environment Minister Balarabe Abbas Lawal and the heads of NEMA and the Hydrological Services Agency to explain what steps are being taken to prevent damage from predicted heavy flooding in 22 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Hon. Sesi Whingan, representing Badagry Federal Constituency, raised the motion during a plenary session. He cited a government report predicting five days of heavy rainfall, with severe flooding expected in areas along the Rivers Benue, Donga, and Ogun floodplains. States like Osun, Delta, Cross River, Anambra, Taraba, Nasarawa, and Kebbi are at high risk.

Whingan warned that without proper action, the flooding could displace communities, destroy properties, and claim lives. He emphasized the need for timely evacuations, temporary shelters, and support for those affected.

In response, the House directed the Ministry of Environment and state governments to begin evacuation plans and provide necessary assistance, including medical aid and temporary housing. Committees on Environment, Disaster Preparedness, and Water Resources have been tasked with monitoring these efforts and ensuring long-term support for rebuilding affected areas.
