The Federal Government has promised to boost security in the South-East region to ensure peace and support the region’s economic growth. The Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, made this commitment during his visit to Enugu, where he met with military officers, security personnel, and local community leaders to discuss strategies for tackling insecurity.

During his visit, Minister Badaru highlighted the importance of safety for businesses and communities to thrive. Speaking at the 82 Division of the Nigerian Army and the Joint Task Force in Enugu, he praised the efforts of security personnel and encouraged them to step up their fight against insecurity in the region.

“President Tinubu has directed me to work with all stakeholders to find lasting solutions to the security challenges in the South-East. Without security, there can be no peace or development,” Badaru said. He added that the federal government recognizes the entrepreneurial energy of the South-East people and is committed to creating a peaceful environment where businesses can flourish.

Engaging Stakeholders for Solutions

The Defence Minister held meetings with traditional rulers, security agency heads, students, and other community leaders. He invited their input on practical ways to enhance security and foster peace. “We are here to listen and to collaborate. Your suggestions are invaluable in helping us achieve a safer and more secure South-East,” he emphasized.

The Minister assured the public that President Bola Tinubu’s administration has made significant strides in addressing insecurity nationwide, including in the South-East. He reiterated the government’s determination to eliminate threats to peace and stability under Tinubu’s leadership.

Security Preparations for the Festive Season

Major General Hassan Dada, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 82 Division and head of Operation Udo Ka, shared the Army’s plans for the upcoming holiday season. He explained that the military’s joint task force in the South-East is taking steps to ensure safety during the Christmas period, which traditionally sees a high number of people returning to the region.

“Our goal is to provide a secure atmosphere that allows everyone to enjoy the festivities without fear,” Dada said.

The Role of Social Media in Security

During the visit, retired Major General John Nwoga addressed the impact of social media on insecurity. He noted that the spread of outdated videos depicting criminal activities contributes to fear and panic in communities.

“Our people must recognize the dangers of misinformation and work together to counter the spread of fake news,” Nwoga urged.

Tour of Security Installations in Imo State

As part of his tour, Minister Badaru visited several military and security facilities in Imo State, including the Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Okigwe, the 211 Quick Response Group of the Nigerian Air Force in Owerri, and the Naval Base in Oguta. He conveyed President Tinubu’s gratitude to the troops for their efforts and encouraged them to build on their successes.

The Minister also paid a courtesy visit to Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma. During the meeting, Badaru thanked the governor for his support of the Nigerian Army and the Joint Task Force’s operations in the region.

“All officers and men deeply appreciate your contributions,” the Minister said, acknowledging the state government’s role in aiding security efforts.

Call for Unity and Cooperation

The Ministry of Defence emphasized its commitment to creating a safe and peaceful South-East that allows communities and businesses to thrive. Minister Badaru called on all stakeholders, including residents, community leaders, and security agencies, to work together to address the region’s security challenges.

“This government is determined to end insecurity in Nigeria, and we cannot do it alone. Collaboration is key,” he stated.

Conclusion

The federal government’s renewed focus on South-East security underlines its recognition of the region’s importance to Nigeria’s overall development. By involving local communities, improving military strategies, and addressing misinformation, the government aims to restore peace and stability. With these efforts, the South-East is poised to become a more secure and prosperous region for all its residents.
