The House of Representatives Committee on Polytechnics and Higher Technical Education has criticized three federal polytechnics over financial mismanagement and other issues.
The committee, which was reviewing the budget performance of the institutions, found several problems, including unfair hiring practices, spending beyond the budget, and incomplete projects. The Federal Polytechnic in Mubi, Adamawa State, came under fire when its rector, Dr. Abdulrahman Ishaku, presented information about delayed projects, such as staff quarters and an administrative block that were supposed to be completed within two to three years. Despite receiving enough funding, these projects were still not finished. The committee was disappointed by this and instructed the rector to provide a full list of unfinished projects for the 2025 budget.
The Federal Polytechnic in Damaturu, Yobe State, was also criticized for misusing its Internally Generated Revenue (IGR). The acting rector, Dr. Ibrahim Babale Gashua, explained that insecurity in the area had led to fewer students, which reduced income. However, the committee pointed out that the institution’s spending had not been reduced in line with this claim.
Finally, the Federal Polytechnic in Monguno, Borno State, was also warned for not following fair employment practices. The committee found that the institution had hired more people from one region, violating the federal character rule.
The committee stressed that these institutions must improve their financial management and follow government rules to ensure transparency and fairness.
