Reps Slam 3 Polytechnics Over Financial Mismanagement and Employment Irregularities

The House of Representatives Committee on Polytechnics and Higher Technical Education has criticized three federal polytechnics—Mubi, Monguno, and Damaturu—over financial and administrative issues.

During an oversight meeting, the committee discovered several problems, including misuse of funds, incomplete projects, and employment violations. At Federal Polytechnic Mubi, for example, a staff quarter and an administrative block that were meant to be completed within two to three years still remain unfinished despite receiving adequate funding. The committee was particularly upset by these ongoing issues and asked the rector to provide a list of all unfinished projects, their costs, and the current status for inclusion in the 2025 budget.

Federal Polytechnic Damaturu was also criticized for using insecurity in the region as an excuse for financial mismanagement. The acting rector explained that low student enrollment due to insecurity had caused a decrease in the institution’s revenue. However, the committee pointed out that, despite this claim, the polytechnic’s spending did not show a corresponding reduction.

Additionally, the Federal Polytechnic Monguno faced criticism for biased employment practices, with the committee discovering that staff hiring favored one region over others. The institution was urged to follow proper federal employment guidelines.
