Olufemi Oluyede, the Acting Chief of Army Staff, has promised to bring lasting peace to Nigeria if confirmed in the role. Speaking to the House of Representatives Committee on Defence and Army on Wednesday, Oluyede highlighted the need for unity among Nigerians, stronger ties with neighboring countries, and better cooperation between security agencies to tackle the country’s security issues.

Oluyede, who stepped in following the passing of Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, expressed his commitment to continue where his predecessor left off. He pointed to his 30-year career in the military, saying it has equipped him with the experience to lead the Army through its current challenges.

He also made a case for tactical aircraft to support ground troops during combat operations. “We need aircraft ready at the front lines to assist during tactical operations. This would make our Army more effective,” he said.

Hon. Babajimi Benson, Chairman of the Defence Committee, acknowledged the security threats Nigeria faces, ranging from insurgency to cybercrime. He emphasized that the military needs to adopt new strategies and that the House is committed to providing necessary support, including funding and oversight.

Benson reminded Oluyede that the role comes with great responsibility, urging him to prioritize the welfare of soldiers and build trust among Nigerians. “If confirmed, you’ll need to work closely with other security agencies and show strong leadership,” Benson added.

The committee is expected to present its decision on Oluyede’s confirmation during Thursday’s plenary.
