The House of Representatives is holding a National Dialogue today at the Transcorp Hilton, Abuja, to discuss reforms in local government and the ongoing constitutional amendment.

The event, hosted by the House Committee on Constitution Review, led by Deputy Speaker Hon. Benjamin Kalu, is in partnership with the Policy and Legal Advocacy Centre (PLAC) and supported by the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office (FCDO).

Key topics include financial and administrative autonomy for local governments, free and fair local elections, and ways to ensure transparency and accountability at the local level.

House spokesperson Hon. Akin Rotimi Jr. said the dialogue would also explore how stakeholders like federal and state governments, the judiciary, civil society, traditional rulers, and local communities can help push for these reforms.

The goal is to create a roadmap for specific constitutional changes.

Deputy Speaker Kalu highlighted the importance of the event, saying, “This is a key step towards building a strong local government system, which is essential for our democracy and national unity.”
