The House of Representatives has expressed frustration over the absence of key officials at a hearing investigating the retirement of more than 1,000 staff members of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
The Chairman of the Adhoc Committee, Hon. Bello Kumo, said both the CBN Governor, Yemi Cardoso, and the Minister of Labour and Employment, Muhammadu Maigari Dingyadi, failed to honor their invitations. He warned that the committee would not tolerate such disregard and would take legal action if it happened again.
“We will not allow anyone to take us for granted. If this continues, we’ll apply the law,” Kumo said during the session at the National Assembly in Abuja.
The hearing was initially set for Wednesday but was moved to Thursday because of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s 2025 budget presentation. Despite the setbacks, representatives from the Federal Character Commission attended, earning commendation from the chairman.
Speaker of the House, Dr. Tajudeen Abbas, also weighed in, describing the CBN’s mass retirement as a decision that affects not just the workers and their families but the entire country. He urged the committee to dig deep into how the N50 billion severance package was calculated and ensure that everything was done by the book.
The committee promised to give everyone involved a fair hearing and will announce a new date for the next session.
