The House of Representatives Committee on Defence has resolved to increase the 2025 budget allocation for the Ministry of Defence to sustain ongoing successes in combating insecurity.
The decision followed a motion by Rep. Philip Agbese, who commended the military’s efforts, particularly in the northwest. Agbese praised Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, for his leadership and urged more funding to support the fight against insurgency and banditry.
Matawalle described the current N50 billion allocation as inadequate, citing challenges like unpaid group life insurance for military personnel, lack of funds for equipment, and poor living conditions in barracks. He requested an additional N20 billion for critical needs, promising to address banditry within two months with proper resources.
Committee Chairman, Rep. Babajimi Benson, acknowledged the military’s achievements but emphasized the need for transparent and efficient use of funds. He assured continued support for the defence sector, recognizing its importance to national security.
