The House of Representatives Committee on Reformatory Institutions has raised concerns over how the Nigeria Correctional Services (NCS) spent the N12.5 billion it received in intervention funds in 2024.
Acting Controller General Sylvester Nwakuche appeared before the committee to defend the agency’s 2025 budget and was asked to provide details on the projects funded by the intervention money, including the contractors and locations.
Committee member Afam Ogene criticized the NCS for spending the funds without approval from the National Assembly and insisted that full details of the expenditures be provided.
The committee also asked for documents related to the feeding of inmates since January 2024. Nwakuche presented a 2025 budget proposal of N183.6 billion, which includes funding for personnel, capital projects, overheads, and inmate feeding.
He said the capital budget of N13.4 billion is insufficient and requested an increase to N70.4 billion. This would help improve custodial facilities, purchase security equipment, and modernize training centers.
