The House of Representatives Committee on Information and National Orientation has rejected the proposed N8.7 billion budget for 2025, calling it insufficient for the ministry’s responsibilities.
They criticized the N1.2 billion allocated for capital projects as inadequate and noted the ministry’s 2024 budget was higher, despite a significant increase in the national budget.
The committee proposed lobbying for more funds, emphasizing the need to adequately fund the ministry’s operations, especially its foreign offices. They also called for the consolidation of information-related budgets under the ministry and an end to the envelope budgeting system.
Minister Muhammed Idris defended the ministry’s efforts to inform and engage citizens and stressed the importance of rebuilding trust between the government and the public.
However, the committee pledged to push for a higher allocation to support the ministry’s mandate.
