The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has promised to support efforts aimed at improving education in Nigeria.
Kalu gave this assurance when a team from the University of Calabar, led by the Vice Chancellor, Professor Florence Obi, and the Provost of the Postgraduate School, Professor Enyong Ubana, paid him a visit at his office in Abuja.
He praised the 10th Assembly for its commitment to policies that enhance education and spoke fondly of his days as a student at the University of Calabar. According to him, the university taught him the values of hard work, competition, and patriotism, which shaped his character and helped him contribute to national development.
Kalu also noted that the success of some students from the university inspired him to create awards that encourage young law students to excel.
During the visit, the Vice Chancellor decorated him as an ambassador of the university. Kalu, who is currently pursuing a doctorate in law at the institution, pledged to uphold the values and legacy of his alma mater.
The Vice Chancellor and Professor Ubana, who also serves as the Chairman of the UNICAL at 50 Organizing Committee, described Kalu as a source of pride for the university and the nation. They visited to inform him about the university’s upcoming 50th anniversary celebrations and convocation lecture, where he has been chosen as the guest lecturer.
