The Chairman of the House Committee on Electoral Matters, Hon. Adebayo Balogun, has called for urgent reforms in Nigeria’s electoral laws, citing gaps exposed during the 2023 elections.
Speaking at a consultative meeting with election petition lawyers, organized in collaboration with PLAC and the UK FCDO, he stressed the need for legislative action to enhance electoral transparency and credibility.
Balogun highlighted key areas for reform, including judicial inconsistencies in election cases, the need for streamlined dispute resolution timelines, and stricter penalties for electoral offences. He emphasized the role of election litigation lawyers in identifying weaknesses in the system and shaping legislative amendments.
Similarly, Senate Committee Chairman, Senator Sharafadeen Abiodun Alli, echoed the urgency of electoral reforms, underscoring the importance of legal practitioners in refining Nigeria’s electoral framework. Both lawmakers pledged to work towards a transparent, fair, and credible electoral system that restores public confidence in elections.
