The South East Caucus in the House of Representatives has urged NAFDAC to reopen the Onitsha Bridgehead Market, which was sealed as part of a nationwide crackdown on fake drugs.
Caucus leader Rep. Igariwey Enwo condemned the activities of traders dealing in counterfeit medicines but cautioned against punishing innocent businesses.
He commended NAFDAC’s efforts but stressed that shutting down the entire market harms medicine users in the South East and South South regions. Instead, he urged the agency to arrest and prosecute offenders while ensuring legitimate traders can continue their businesses.
He also called on the Nigeria Customs Service to tighten border security to prevent the influx of fake drugs.
