The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, has called for the establishment of 10 new Federal Colleges of Education, stating that the existing 205 institutions are insufficient for Nigeria’s growing population, where over 60% are under 24 years old.

Speaking at a public hearing in Abuja, Abbas emphasized that strengthening teacher education is crucial for national development, job creation, and socio-economic growth. He stressed the need for equitable access to quality teacher training across all regions.

House members, including Adamu Tanko, Prof. Julius Ihonvbere, and Anamero Dekeri, backed the proposal, highlighting the shortage of quality teachers and the importance of technical education. The public hearing provided stakeholders an opportunity to contribute to policies that will enhance Nigeria’s education sector.
