The House of Representatives Committee on the South East Development Commission (SEDC) has approved the 2025 budget of N250 billion, aimed at addressing the long-standing infrastructural deficits in the South East, which has been neglected for over 54 years since the civil war.
Committee Chairman, Rep. Chris Nkwonta, praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for signing the SEDC Bill into law, stating that the budget will focus on roads, bridges, railways, erosion control, and human capital development. While acknowledging that the funds may not be enough, he described it as a crucial first step toward the region’s development.
Nkwonta also highlighted that additional funding is expected from federal allocations, contributions from South Eastern states, ecological funds, and oil companies. He expressed optimism that the initiative will help curb youth unrest and insecurity, as improved government presence will address key concerns in the region.
He emphasized that peace and security are essential for development and assured that the SEDC’s projects would contribute to stability, employment, and economic growth in the South East.
