The Federal Government is working to address funding shortfalls in Nigeria’s healthcare system following the U.S. withdrawal of financial support.
During a session with the House Committee on HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria (ATM), Minister of Health Prof. Mohammed Ali Pate said the impact of the funding cut was cushioned by collaboration among federal, state, and local governments. He emphasized the need for Nigeria to take greater responsibility for its healthcare system.
Committee Chairman Amobi Ogah proposed a Healthcare Sector Trust Fund to provide financial stability, similar to TETFUND in education, stressing the importance of proactive funding measures.
Prof. Pate also highlighted the crucial role of lawmakers in health advocacy, urging them to educate communities on issues like immunization, sanitation, and disease prevention. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to prioritizing healthcare as a key driver of national development.
