A coalition of Nigeria’s opposition lawmakers has accused pro-Wike members of the Rivers State House of Assembly of attempting to derail the upcoming local government election through illegal amendments and court orders.
They alleged that the lawmakers sought to reinstate former council chairmen whose tenures had expired.
The lawmakers also condemned efforts to obstruct the reception of the 2025 budget, as directed by the Supreme Court, emphasizing that governance would not be stalled.
Commending Governor Siminalayi Fubara for his adherence to the court’s ruling despite provocations, they accused Wike of seeking control rather than peace.
They warned that while Rivers indigenes prepare for the August 9 election, Wike’s group is pursuing injunctions to halt the process.
The coalition also praised Fubara for his democratic approach to budget presentation, despite the refusal of pro-Wike lawmakers to engage. They assured the public that governance would continue and vowed to resist any attempts to destabilize the state.
