The House of Representatives Committee on FCT Area Councils has assured traditional rulers of its commitment to securing better funding and legislative backing for traditional institutions.

Chairman Hon. Fredrick Agbedi acknowledged their request for a five percent allocation from Area Councils’ funds but noted that existing financial regulations do not explicitly provide for such funding.

He pledged to explore legislative amendments and encouraged traditional councils to seek partnerships with Area Councils.

FCT Traditional Council Chairman, HRH Alhaji Adamu Baba Yunusa, highlighted challenges including inadequate funding and the absence of a legal framework for financial support.
He urged the government to implement policies similar to those in some states, where traditional rulers receive five percent of local government allocations.

Meanwhile, lawmakers expressed concerns over the displacement of indigenous FCT residents, criticizing the government’s resettlement approach. The committee assured traditional rulers of ongoing efforts to address their concerns through legislative reforms.
