The House of Representatives has reiterated its commitment to improving healthcare, particularly in eye care, through legislative measures. At a public hearing in Abuja, Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, represented by Rep. George Ozodinobi, highlighted three key bills aimed at enhancing vision and optical health.
The bills propose establishing the Federal Institute of Vision and Optical Research and the Federal College of Optometry in Rivers State, as well as amending the National Eye Centre Act to expand specialist eye care services.
Committee Chairman Rep. Alex Egbona assured a thorough review of the bills, while Rep. Victor Obuzor, the sponsor, stressed the urgent need for specialized eye care, citing the persistence of eye diseases despite Nigeria’s long-standing optometry program.
