Labour Party Reps Caucus Debunks Abure’s Claim on Leadership Appointment

The Labour Party Caucus in the House of Representatives has refuted recent claims by Julius Abure, the party’s ousted national chairman, describing his statement on the appointment of a new caucus leader as both misleading and laughable.

Responding to media queries after the Supreme Court upheld Abure’s removal, the caucus clarified that leadership within the group is not by appointment but determined through an internal election process. They emphasized that members choose their leader based on confidence in their competence, representation, and integrity.

Recalling the events of May 6, 2023, the caucus noted that 35 Labour Party members in the 10th National Assembly participated in the election that brought Hon. Afam Ogene to leadership. Ogene, a seasoned legislator from the 7th Assembly, won the vote with a clear majority of 21.

Reaffirming the group’s loyalty to the party’s National Caretaker Committee (NCC), currently led by Senator Esther Nenadi Usman, Ogene stressed the need for unity and forward-thinking leadership within the party.

The caucus also underscored the importance of leaving behind the turmoil of past leadership battles and committing to a vision that strengthens the party and inspires collective support among its members.
