Reps Launch Probe into Petrol User Charge Non-Remittance

The House of Representatives has inaugurated an Ad-hoc Committee to investigate the remittance, utilization, and accountability of the 5% user charge on petrol meant for road maintenance. Speaker Abbas Tajudeen expressed concern over persistent non-compliance, which has hindered infrastructure repairs despite legislative oversight.

The probe will determine the extent of violations, identify responsible parties, and quantify unremitted funds. Committee Chairman Waive Ejiroghene Francis emphasized the urgency of the investigation, citing years of non-transparency and alleged fund mismanagement. The committee will engage government agencies, independent auditors, and civil society organizations to ensure full accountability and may propose legislative reforms to prevent future violations.
