The House of Representatives on Wednesday met with Nigerian women leaders to advance proposals for special seats for women in parliament.
The session, chaired by House Leader Prof. Julius Ihonvbere, was part of the 2025 National Assembly Open Week, themed ‘Session on Special Seats for Women in Parliament.’
Speaker Abbas Tajudeen, at the event’s opening, reaffirmed the 10th Assembly’s plan to amend the constitution to guarantee reserved seats for women and persons with disabilities. Under the proposal, 10% of seats would be set aside for women and 5% for persons with disabilities.
First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu, represented by Hon. Kafilat Ogbara, described the move as crucial for inclusive governance, urging lawmakers to ensure its passage.
She stressed that women’s representation is about competence and national development, not charity.
Prominent participants, including Ogun State Deputy Governor Noimot Salako-Oyedele and Benue State Deputy Speaker Lami Danladi, commended the initiative and called for collective support to make it a reality.
